Rebirth of Veggie Scraps

These photos of Calla Lily were sent in my listener Marion. She says:
I continue to enjoy your show. Just sending a note regarding the call on Calla lilies from last week. Mine get much too large to keep in a pot inside the house.

They spend 4 months in the ground - June, July, August, and September. The other 8 months they are in a box in my cellar. When I dig them in the fall, I keep them in my dining room for about a week to dry before storing them.

In the spring, I  add composted cow manure, fertilizer, and lime to the area before planting them 4 inches below ground level. They take care of themselves after that. The flower stems are very strong on a healthy plant.

And they multiply. Every year I have to give away a lot of callas.

I am attaching some pictures. The picture of the row of callas fills in completely with the beautiful spotted leaves as the summer goes on.  In another picture you can see that one rhizome has produced another on the side. I set it on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper so that you could see the size it reaches in one season.

Thanks again for a wonderful show

These are photos via email from a Gardeners Calendar listener who had problems with an older flowering crabapple losing leaves in mid summer. It is, at least in part, apple scab, a fungus that grows on/in the leaves.
