It isn't for everyone. But if you are up for a challenge. If you like the feeling of accomplishment that comes at the end of a day of being productive. If you like an environment where your presence is appreciated. Then we may be a match for you!
The job that we do is not easy, but it is fulfilling. It boils down to three things: We Grow plants. We Move plants. We Sell Plants. Boredom is not something that we become familiar with. A phrase that we have used to describe who we are looking for is 'Must be readily adaptable to rapidly changing priorities in a rapidly paced retail horticultural environment.' A typical day doesn't really exist. Staff could easily find themselves planting seedlings in the morning, watering later in the morning, accepting a delivery of young plants, helping a retail customer find the right plants for their situation, or even making a delivery.
That is the what, but the WHO is the important part! Friendly people. That is who we want. The technical aspects of the job can be learned; attitude can not be. Are you outgoing? Do you enjoy making another human being happy? Can you multitask? Do you like to challenge yourself to see how quickly you can complete a task? Do you love plants, nature, and the environment? Have you always felt that you have an inner artist, even if they are trapped deep inside?
Then let's explore. Send us a resume and cover letter. Tell us about yourself and why you want to become part of our team. Fill out an application! We want to know about the true you. We are not a corporate monolith with a personnel department that expects conformity. We strive for excellence and understand that that expresses itself in different ways.

Back to the Earth. Bemis Farms Nursery, a small local family owned and operated Nursery and Garden Center is looking for fun, optimistic team members who enjoy working with, and helping, people.
Tasks vary with the season. You would be responsible for greeting customers, finding out what the customer needs (which is not always the same as what they think they want), showing them, or directing them to, the items, and completing the sale. Some customers may also need some assistance with "seat of the pants" design, the kind you scratch out in the sand. It is a great opportunity to share your knowledge in a fulfilling way. In between customers you would assist in the growing, care, and maintenance of plants and grounds.
Not every individual is going to have every skill or ability, but the right person should have skills/experience which include several of the following:
Be knowledgeable of shrubs, trees, perennials, and/or groundcovers hardy in central New England in order to help guide retail customers efficiently through the selection process.
Be a “people person” who sees each of our customers as an opportunity to help someone. We want to celebrate our love of plants with our customers.
Have the ability to design “on the fly” with retail customers at the nursery.
We like to say you must be readily adaptable to rapidly changing priorities in a fast-paced retail horticulture environment. Every day is different. New opportunities. New things to learn.
As a small place, you would be doing a little bit of a lot of things. This might include unloading deliveries, assisting with workshops, taking a small delivery, or a myriad of other things. All this requires the physical ability to lug plants as necessary.
Two other areas that could be helpful are landscape design and installation, and repair of “stuff”. Neither of these are necessarily required, but would be a bonus.
Bemis Farms Nursery and its staff are truly committed to solving a customer's problems, not merely sending them home with a plant. We have a guarantee unsurpassed by anyone, one without specific time limits, which promises a plant will perform in the way it is supposed to. This means we have to be sure the plant will fit the customer’s needs over the long term. We are not out for the quick buck, but rather the long-term customer.
We also recognize that what Barry and Eliot Jordan’s father (of Jordan’s Furniture) taught them is as true now as it ever was “Every Business is Show Business” We are not and do not want to be the stodgy stick-in-the-mud garden center. Shopping should be a fun experience.
Some weekend hours are a must. Our Staff Manual details the specifics of employment. We encourage you to read a copy if you are interested in our organization. Please feel free to contact Ed or Tina if you have any questions.
Minimum one year experience working in the green industry, or Associates degree in agriculture.
