Wait! What the heck is a bare root tree?
Virtually all trees are grown in the ground for the first one to three years of
their life. They are then typically dug out of the tree "liner" production
nursery without any soil on their roots. They then go one of two
directions. They may be planted in a field production nursery, or in a container
production nursery. Field production is typically used when the trees will have
a 1 1/2 to 2 inch diameter or more at time of harvest. They are dug with a large
ball of soil on their roots. Alternatively the bare root trees can be planted in
large pots. This is used when the nursery desires a trunk size of 1 to 1 1/2
inches or less at time of harvest. So while bare root trees may be unusual in
the consumer channels, they are the norm for production nurseries. A summary of some of the benefits of bare root planting is from the
University of Massachusetts and is
here.
There have to be drawbacks, right?
Yes and no. The 15 minute video by Dr. Nina Bassuk of the Urban
Horticulture Institute at Cornell University explains it in some depth (If it
isn't playing click "allow blocked content" at the top of your browser). The two limitations are that the bare root trees can only be planted
in the early spring, and the largest bare root tree one usually wants to plant
is about a 1 1/2 inch diameter trunk. there are a few plants that are not
especially suited to bare root planting. Others need a little of special
attention. Of the ones in this sale the Birches and Oaks may need some special
attention, primarily before you get them. All bare root trees really need to be
kept moist and should be planted the same day you pick them up. You can wait
maybe one day if you have a good cool moist place to keep them.
Why are they so much less
expensive? Handling. One person can carry a bundle of 5 to 10 trees easily.
with potted trees it would
take two people to move one tree easily. With field
grown, called balled and burlapped or B&B, it would take two people and
equipment to move one tree.
