Ah, spring.  It's finally here!  And with it comes the new workshop list from Bemis Farms Nursery.  Tina spent the winter traveling to the trade shows and gift shows to look for more interesting pots to introduce.  We have a new, copper square saucer that we are making into a garden mosaic, a new, deck-rail planter and a new mailbox planter.  There will be be more new items on the late spring /early summer list, too!

We've been planting herbs like crazy, so we should have plenty of thyme to go around, but you may not have plenty of time to sign up, as some classes may sell out, as we have a limited number of the more unusual pots.  So sign up early, and check the website often, because as classes fill, we will add more dates and times.

Please enjoy the Youtube links to the songs I named each class after.  I have a ball choosing just the right video that shares a little bit about me as a person.  Just make sure you listen during break time at work...I wouldn't want to get you fired!

Endless Love

$39.95

An encore performance of one of last year’s popular classes featuring an Endless Summer Hydrangea in a blue glazed pot. Endless Summer is the best hydrangea for New England.  Unli8ke the older varieties, this is a true breakthrough.  If flowers on same-year wood, so there is no need to worry that the plant had winter die back, the number one cause of hydrangeas not blooming in Central Massachusetts.  (cape Cod and Rhode Island are just enough warmer that they don't have a problem with winter injury, which is why they are so beautiful down there!)

We will be planting a "bare-root" hydrangea in the blue glazed pot, and topping it off with a few pansies for a little color until the hydrangea comes into bloom this summer.

This version of the song Endless Love features Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross. Click here.

Heart and Soul

$29.95

Add love to your shady spot with perennials:   You will plant two different kinds of bleeding heart  (the tall, showy variety, and the dwarf, non-stop blooming variety) along with false forget-me-nots with airy, blue blooms and heart-shaped leaves. We will be using bare-root perennials, and top the pot off with a few pansies for instant color until the perennials sprout.  Enjoy this pot until early summer, then find a nice, shady nook that needs brightening, and plant the whole root ball together, or split the plants apart.

Pink and blue make a lovely combination in the early spring garden.

If you are a fan of the TV show "House" like I am, you may or may not realize that Hugh Laurie had a lead role in the movie Stuart Little, where he plays his version of Heart and Soul on the piano with Michael J. Fox as Stuart. Click here.

Please Mr. Postman

$39.95

Just when you thought you couldn’t fit one more single flower in your garden, we’ve come up with a way to embellish your mailbox.  This isn't a particularly great picture of the plants, as I didn't have much to work with this early in the season.  But it does show the real container, and what it will look like around a real mailbox.

Sure, I like the Beatles version of this song, but there nothing that compares with the Marvelettes version! Click here.

Give Peas a Chance

$29.95

Fragrant sweet peas climb & mingle amidst edible snap peas grown on a twig trellis with a selection of crisp salad greens & edible flowers.  Sweet peas have got to be one of the prettiest flowers that nature has created.  You don't see them very often, because most people don't realize that they should be planted very early, since they thrive in cool weather.  Same thing for edible peas.  You really want to plant them in early April.  Most folks who don't know any better try to plant their whole vegetable garden around Memorial day, but peas and lettuce LOVE April and May weather!

Turned to Stone

$29.95

Make a hypertufa pot by mixing cement & other wet ingredients to create an “old stone” planter. Pick up and plant when dry Wear old clothes.

We will mix peat moss, perlite and Portand cement, add water to the correct consistency, and form it into a low, irregular bowl.  It will take about 2 days to dry.  Pick it up at your convenience, and plant a selection of sedum and hen's & chicks - all dry-tolerant, perennial plants that thrive on neglect.  So you can put this pot almost anywhere in the sun, and not worry if you hose doesn't reach it!

Tina has been making these planters since she learned how 30 years ago (!) in her high school greenhouse club.  She will show you her own, 30 year old planter she still has from that time.

I've always enjoyed the music of ELO, and wish the band was played more on the radio today. Click here.

April Showers

$49.95

…bring May Towers of the new Cascading Alyssum from Proven Winners. Create two different baskets, one short, one tall.  The base will look different from the picture,  We will be making two baskets, each one on it's own twiggy base.  One is about 3 feet high, the other is about a foot high.  This 2010 introduction from Proven Winners  is growing like wild up in the greenhouses, and should explode into huge globes of color in no time!

Apparently, this song was the number one requested song of the troops in WWI.  The only reason I know the song is because Barry Manilow plays it in concert when it rains at an outdoor venue.  When I looked up an original version, I found out that little tidbit. Click here.

Play with Your Food

$29.95

This 16 inch faux whiskey barrel bursts forth with crisp salad greens, herbs & broccoli early, and onions & gourmet potatoes at season’s end.  This is a really nice resin container that I got a great deal on in Baltimore, so I bought 60 of them!  Not only will this container look pretty, you will harvest your own food!  It's locally grown when it's your own!!

This song comes from production HONK! a musical version of the story of the Ugly Duckling.  I actually played the mother of "Ugly" in the musical about 8 years ago, but this video is not from the Spencer Theatre Company's version.  It's just a good one I found online.  The cat is getting ready to cook the ugly duckling, but remembers he is allowed to "Play with Your Food' before you eat it.  Will "Ugly" escape? Strawberry Fields

$29.95

Join the grow-your-own food craze by planting this 3 tier cascade of ever-bearing, perennial fruit, and you’ll have strawberry fields forever! Some strawberry varieties take a year to get established, but the ever-bearing types make fruit the first year.  We will be using three plastic pots to create these tiers, but, trust me, you won't even see the pot much after the plants have filled in!

Circle of Life

There is a really expensive living wreath frame on the market that will set you back about $50 for the frame and plants.  Leave it the folks at Bemis Farms Nursery to find a way to make an even bigger wreath for almost half the cost!

One year, we had 100 people sign up for this class, so sign up early if you want to come at 4pm.  Chances are, we will be adding more times to this class to accommodate everyone, and give you the help you need to do it correctly (yes that really is Tina in the picture.  It is about 10 years old, when I had long, dark hair with no grays!  My bookkeeper thought I was wearing a wig!

I got to see this song performed on Broadway by the cast of The Lion King, and it is an experience I will never forget.  The costumes in that musical were beyond description. Click here.

Lately, we have been listening to a lot of country music up in the growing greenhouses while we are planting, because our work/study student, Amanda, is a big fan.  I had never heard this song before, but it is really nice, and the guy isn't too hard on the eyes, either! Click here.

Scarborough Fair

$29.95

Are you going to plant parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme in this two-tiered assembly of ten different culinary herbs?  This is the actual picture of Judy Ruszinski's pot she made last year.  It's so full, you'll never know there's a plastic pot under there so we could splurge on more herbs!

Thanks, Judy, for the picture.  When can I come over for a swim and a nice salad made with those herbs??

Here's Simon and Garfunkle's classic rendition of the song. (Click here) Here is a bit of fascinating info I found on Wikipedia:

The song tells the tale of a young man, who tells the listener to ask his former lover to perform for him a series of impossible tasks, such as making him a shirt without a seam and then washing it in a dry well, adding that if she completes these tasks he will take her back. Often the song is sung as a duet, with the woman then giving her lover a series of equally impossible tasks, promising to give him his seamless shirt once he has finished.

The real Scarborough Fair dates back to 1253 AD. Read more fascinating history here.

Friends in Low Places

$29.95

Is it a fairy bed, a squirrel pillow or just a garden tapestry filled with a mixture of perennial Jeepers Creepers in a low, copper square?  This square is about 18 inches across, and very, very classy looking.  In fact, it should probably be a deluxe class, but I so enjoy splitting the groundcovers in the greenhouse in March to make enough plants for this project, that I want a whole bunch of people to sign up!

OK, this is THE ONE link you must click on, even if you have skipped the rest.  This video features Terry Fador (who I also met after his show in Worcester), the winner a few years ago of America's Got Talent. He is an extremely talented singer, ventriloquist,  AND impersonator who performs this Garth Brook song. Click here.
