Please Note: These classes are from a
previous time. We leave them up for reference purposes only.
First of all, we’d like to thank everyone who signed up for
our early spring workshops. We had the most response ever, and had to schedule 4
times for some of the more popular classes so we wouldn’t have to disappoint
anyone. It really kept us hopping here! We are in the process of building more
seminar benches, and streamlining the pot-filling process to make it even more
enjoyable to come.
Once again, we had a little fun coming up with the names of
our classes. They are all named after a song, and each has a link to a popular
video of the song. You’ll have to indulge me if you choose to watch the video
for the song “Daisy” for the class named “Bicycle Built for Two.” If you’re not
a sci-fi fan, you may want to pass, but I think it’s interesting…
We have quite a few brand new classes that we are very
excited about, and hope you are too. The plants all look great in the
greenhouse, and are just itching to jump into your pots and grow even bigger!
The amount of color in our main greenhouse has never been higher in the eight
years since the greenhouse was built- you practically have to wear sunglasses
because it is so bright in here! But we grew it all so it could be bright at
your house, not here, so come give these plants new homes. Don’t worry…we’ll
grow more!

You Say
Tomato …
$29 |
...I say potahto. Let’s plant both of these
veggies and some herbs in individual plant sacks with a pretty floral
pattern. You will leave the class with two sacks. They are about a foot
tall and 18 inches wide, and have little flowers on them. This includes
several bamboo stakes to train the plants up.
The video I have for this class is called Let’s
Call the Whole Thing Off, and comes from the classic movie Shall We
Dance with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Most people know the song as
You say Tomato.

My Way
$99
or $69 for returning club members |
Pick a hayrack or urn & join our container club!
Plant it now, and again in the fall, and at Christmas with greens.
I chose this Frank Sinatra song as the name of
this class, because not only do you get to choose your own pot, a
hayrack window box or a concrete urn, but you get to customize the
plants to match your home. This is our very best value class, as you get
to return in the fall and plant your container up with fall plants, but
also again at Christmas, when we put fresh greens, berries, cones, and a
big red bow.

$29 |
If you have trouble keeping your window box watered
in a hot, place, try this combo of tough plants in this 24 inch resin
window box. There will be enough spillers in this pot that you will
never know the pot is plastic once the plants grow in.

Wake Up
Little Suzy
$29 |
Everything you’ll need to grow this stunning,
annual black-eyed Susan vine 6 feet tall. Taller, if you’ve got the place
for it, so if you want to grow it up a front porch or deck railing, go
ahead. I’ve seen them get 10 feet tall
Don’t you just love the Everly Brothers?
This session is
FULL, but an additional session has been scheduled for 2 pm on the same
day.

Bicycle
Built for Two
$79 |

Ok, so it’s really just
built for one, but we only have 15 of these 3 foot long red
bikes, so sign up early! There is a bonus for this class not
listed on the flyer: you will get to return in November and fill
the bike up with winter greens, berries, and cones. If enough
people sign up early, I may be able to get more bikes, so PLEASE
CALL SOON!
I first heard this song when
watching one of my favorite movies, 2001: A Space Odyssey. In
this scene on the video, the computer, named HAL, has taken on a
life of his own for evil purposes, and Dave has to disable him.
As he does so, the computer starts remembering his “childhood”,
when his programmer taught him a song (Daisy). There is an
interesting story as to why this song was chosen for the movie,
and it is explained in the video clip.

On the
Dark Side
$29 |
If you have a shady side you need to
brighten up, try this window box combo with impatiens, and colorful
coleus. Also done in a 24” resin window bow, with enough spillers that
you won’t see the box once the plants fill in.
The video for this song comes from a great movie
called Eddie and the Cruisers.

Red,
Red Wine
$29 |
Bring an empty (!) bottle of wine to attach to a
nanny stake watering aid to add to your pot with a climbing grape vine.
What the heck is a nanny stake? A terra cotta stake that you attach to a
bottle filled with water. The water slowly drips out, keeping the pot
watered even when you forget! This will be in a 16 inch resin pot with
spillers planted in it which will cascade down over the edge.
Second picture is simply to show the nanny stake in
use.
This is my favorite version of this song.

Margaritaville
$39 |
Plant chartreuse Margarita sweet potato vine and
marguerite daisies in this cute, wooden wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow is
very similar to the picture shown. From end to end, it measures 28
inches long. The part holding the plants is 14 inches long by 11 inches
wide. You should have this wheelbarrow for several years.
This session is
FULL. No more wheelbarrows are available.

Love
Potion #9
$29 |
If eating chocolate boosts your love-life, what
happens when you design a pot with chocolate foliage with contrasting
flowers? I really, really love brown foliage, and the picture really
doesn’t do this class justice. The pot we will be using is a 16 inch
resin pot, but, once again, most of it will not be showing once the
plants fill in, because the chocolate sweet potato vine is an aggressive
spiller.
I’ve loved this song since I was about 8 years old!

Lollipop, Lollipop
$29 |
Create 3 standards & 1 braided topiary out of
coleus, daisies, & more. Each tree grows 3 feet, and eventually make a
nice houseplants. For now, you can enjoy watching these plants grow all
summer outside. They won’t look like much when you leave class, because
we will be starting with plants that are about a foot tall. But we will
show you how to prune them to quickly grow to 3 feet tall, and how to
braid three plants into one.
I once heard a tape of the Bee Gees perform this
song when they were kids, but I couldn’t find it online.

Hangin’
Round
$39 |
Have a bare spot on an
outdoor wall? Fill it will this upscale, metal wall basket. Choose
plants for sun or shade.
This is one of my favorite
Monkees songs. Michael Nesmith was the original singer, but in this
rendition, he did not join the other three boys for the reunion tour. I
guess he got tired of being treated like a monkee!

Pink
Flamingo
$29 |
Be this first in your
neighborhood to create this colorful crane with pink polka-dot plant to
add tasteful whimsy.
This is a brand new class, and I have no
idea how many people might think this is cool, but after a while,
putting plants in pots gets a little redundant for a horticulturist, so
we like to find bizarre things to do. This will surely be a
conversation piece in your yard!
This session are both FULL, but
additional sessions have been scheduled for 11:30 am on the same day, as
well as 7 pm on Thursday June 18.

Let Me

Fairies don’t own lawnmowers, so they use Jeepers
Creepers groundcovers when creating easy-care gardens in bowls.
I thought we might change around our fairy house
class this year, and create a fairy garden in a bowl. I will try to
find some doll house accessories to add to our gardens, but everyone
will leave with at least one fairy to put in their garden. If you want
more, we have a huge selection of affordable fairies to choose from.
This song comes from a very nice animated movie
called Thumbelina. Why do I know this song? Well, the whole musical
score was written by none other than Barry Manilow! I just love all of
the songs in this musical, so if you have nothing better to do, find the
rest of them on You Tube. Better yet, pick up a copy of the video if
you have small children. The tunes are very catchy, and the message of
the movie is inspiring: Always Follow Your Heart.

Earth
Angel
$39 |
Angel’s Trumpet Brugmansia
is a true collector’s plant. Can grow 5 to 8 feet tall, and is easy to
winter over indoors. This is truly a traffic-stopping plant that
belongs in all plant collector’s gardens. You can make cuttings from
this plant very easily and share the plants with your friends.
The video clip comes from my
favorite movie of all times: Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox.

Shining
Star
$29 |
Lots of people have metal stars on their homes, but
you can have a living star with assorted. succulents. This star
measures 18 inches across, and the actual sample is here at the nursery.
(Everyone has been oohing and aahing over it.) I made one to take a
picture of for the flyer, because I’ve never seen one before. When I
found this cool frame at the Atlanta Gift Show, I just knew we had to
fill it with succulents. It took me a while to make it, and because of
that I put a $79 price tag in the finished star. Since it will be your
time used to make it, you can have your own for only $29. There is a
company in California that makes 16 inch living wreaths with succulents
and sells them online for $350!! Aren’t you glad you don’t live in
California?
This session are
both FULL, but additional sessions have been scheduled for 11:30 am on
the same day, as well as 7 pm on Thursday June 25.

$29 |
Create a low, freeform tufastone pot with a wet
mixture of peat moss, cement and perlite. Return when dry & plant
succulents. If you prefer, you can create a taller tufastone molded on
an upside-down pot. Either way, bring plastic gloves, and wear clothes
that can get cement on them, because this can be a messy but very
rewarding project. The pot will dry in about 2 days, so you can return
then to plant it up with 4 perennial succulents that will fill out the
pot during the summer. You can take them out for the winter and plant
them in your garden, and dig them up and return them to you planter in
the spring. Make sure to ask to see my 30 year old tufastone pot I made
in high school. My high school greenhouse club teacher taught us how to
make tufastone pots, and we used to enter them in the Philadelphia
Flower Show. I made one and gave it to her, and when I saw her last
year she gave it back to me! Isn’t that cool?
The 4 pm session
is FULL, but an additional session has been scheduled for 2 pm on the
same day.

Tut
$39 |
A complete water garden in a ceramic pot using a
dwarf version of King Tut Papyrus (Baby Tut) and much more. The picture
happens to show a Bird of Paradise plant, which will not be in the pot,
but it was the only pictue I could find with a Baby Tut Papyrus in a
water garden in a pot.
If you have never seen Steve Martin perform this
song, you are in for a real treat. If you have, watch it again for a
blast from the past.

Cast a concrete birdbath out of a giant leaf such
as rhubarb, castor bean, and pumpkin, and return when hard to paint it.
This is always a popular class, so if you happen to have a patch of
rhubarb, let me know if you are willing to share some leaves.
Remember when Michael Jackson was a cute, little
boy?

Whether this concrete cast
reminds you of Mother Nature, or a Garden Goddess, it will bring
calmness to your garden. It will be made with a variety of leaves around
a concrete face. Return in 2 days to paint it.
This song by the Beatles has always been
one of my favorite ballads.
