Roots 'n Shoots Volume 3, Issue 3 Sept. 2002 A Periodic Newsletter of ¯ Think Fall! Have you heard this catchy jingle on our fall television commercial yet? OK, we admit the song is a little bit on the corny side, but its supposed to stick in your head so you remember that this really is an excellent time to beautify your yard. Cool air temperatures make planting more enjoyable for you and less stressful for your plants. Ideal soil conditions exist for root growth, so trees, shrubs, and perennials can all get established before the ground freezes. And did you check out that cute little boy carrying a pumpkin at the beginning of the commercial? That's Carter Bemis, Dick's grandson, son of Greg and Janet Bemis. We asked him to "star" in our commercial to remind you that fall is the time we promote our children's activities here at Bemis Farms Nursery. We have several activities planned just for the kids including wandering through our Hay Bale Maze, jumping through our Giant Corn Wreath, enjoying a hayride, decorating a pumpkin, making a scarecrow, and our newest event Bemis Farms Nursery Rhymes "Enchanted Hayride" featuring the Spencer Theatre Company. Look inside for details on all of our fall events.v Tina Bemis Wins Service Award Dick, Ed, and Tina Bemis have helped keep their green thumb on the pulse of the horticultural green industry in Massachusetts by actively participating on the boards of the Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association and the Massachusetts Flower Growers Association (MFGA). Tina was recently honored by the MFGA for her work over the last five years. She has served on the Board of Directors, chaired the trial gardens committee and judged annuals at the New England trial gardens in Dover, Mass. She is also the MFGA representative to the New England Greenhouse Conference. For these efforts she received the Outstanding Service Award, in recognition for her outstanding service and commitment to the Massachusetts Floriculture Industry.
A Historical Tidbit With a handful of perennials and a truckload of ambition, Richard "Dick" Bemis started Bemis Farms Nursery in 1947. Using knowledge he had gained as a graduate of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMASS – Amherst he grew plants in soil beds (nobody had yet started growing outdoor plants in pots) and began selling them to the public. Still a family operated business 55 years later, Dick, Ed, & Tina Bemis couldn't do it without the help of Dennis Hogan, Eileen Ramos, Jason Kjellberg, Faith Rushford, Tim Kay, Lisa Hubacz, Chloe Girouard-Martel, David Wilson, and Sam Loftus. And our wonderful customers who are the real reason we are still growing! Feature plant Rose of Sharon These absolutely stunning plants are coming into their own at this time of the year. Fall color is defined by Rose of Sharon, red, lavender, white, or pink. Blooms with a single row of petals like a tropical hibiscus or ones that are smaller and fuller like a carnation. They are all stunning! They will bloom from late summer right up to a hard frost.
We have a group that are an especially good value right now. Priced at only $24.95, and big full and covered with blooms. v |
