Christmas 2009

Please Note: These classes are from a previous time. We leave them up for reference purposes only.

I have one of the best jobs in the world.  While everyone is bemoaning the fact that the growing season has ended, I get to create a list of workshops celebrating the textures, fragrances, and colors of winter. And THEN I get to name them after songs, and look up videos on YouTube, under the guise of actually working!! Then, when a few hard frosts have set the needles on the evergreens, we all begin harvesting a lot of the materials for our workshops right here on our farm.  I particularly love to gather red berries of all kinds during the month of November ( especially on the warmer days). But the best part of my job this time of the year is teaching someone who may have gotten dragged here by a friend to make a wreath or other arrangement. We often get comments from people who say they aren't crafty.  Well, we have been teaching these classes for 14 years, and have learned the tricks of teaching beginners how to be successful, and nothing warms my heart more than hearing someone say "I can't believe I made it myself!"

If you've been here before, you know how nice it is to have someone gather all the materials for you, give you a refresher course on how to make it, encourage you along the way to make sure you are completely happy with the final project.  And you get to leave the mess behind! No need to get pine pitch and needles all over the kitchen table and floor.

I hope to see you soon!  But please don't bring any more coffee.  My doctor has forbidden me from drinking anything over 1 meager cup a day. :((((( (I am still, however, allowed to eat COOKIES...)

For some, celebrating Christmas isn’t about a single day, it’s a whole season of festivities, where the journey to success is just as important than the destination.

It’s not about grabbing some pre-fabricated decorations created by the thousands in a factory. It’s about enjoying the process of creating a beautiful, festive home for you and your family.

It may also be about spending time with someone special – a friend, mother, daughter or sister. If this sounds like you, why not join us?

Have some fun, learn a new skill, and leave the mess behind.

Make all 4 projects shown at left, and enjoy a delicious lunch.

To Grandmother’s House We Go

$29

Bring this fresh, cut- flower arrangement of Chrysanthemums and Bird-of-Paradise to your hostess and let the conversations begin!

This picture doesn't do the project justice.  Please click on the picture to see some more ways of creating this whimsical centerpiece.  I got the idea from a gentleman in Southern California named Jonathan Fong.  I came upon his website, and he has some really cool ideas of things to do with cut flowers.  I bought his book, Flowers that Wow, and I will be featuring more of his projects this spring.

Of all the classes in this season's list, this is my favorite!  It's simple, fun, and makes you smile.  What more could you ask for?

Click here to listen to a beautiful country version of this song by the Juke Box Band.

Many of the elements in the arrangement can be re-used each year, with the addition of some fresh greens and berries.

If you are at work, don't click now, because your boss will be mad, but when you get home, watch this cool video of over 54000 Christmas lights on a house coordinated to Mannheim Steamroller's version of this song.

Frosty the Snowman

$29

Transform Styrofoam balls into two realistic snowballs. Make them into cute little snowmen (actually, a snowman and a snowwoman) nested in a basket of fresh greens to enjoy inside or outside.

In looking at the picture, I just realized how much better the snowpeople would look with SCARVES! So I'll be sure to give you plaid ribbon to make scarves too!  How bad of me to forget to keep their cold necks warm?

I get a kick looking up the songs to include on our website, and I like to dig up unusual versions to introduce people to different styles of music.  This is apparently the original version of this song.  Click here to have a listen.

Jingle Bells

$39

If you don’t have the stamina to make all four projects in our all-day seminar, come and make the sled swag.

Please sign up early.  I bought all the sleds they had, and I don't know if I can get any more.

This is a very large swag that will make a beautiful statement on your front door, or anywhere else you choose to put it.

I wish I could find a real version of Barry doing this song with the group Expose, but here's the next best thing.  A group of siblings lip-synching to the song on a video they made for their dad.  (You didn't say Barry who, did you????).  Click here to watch it.

Wed. Dec. 2

 10am or 7 pm

Because It’s Christmas

$29

Create a round wreath of fresh greens, cones & twigs, or choose a star, square, arch heart, or snowflake to best compliment your home.  Click on the picture to see the snowflake (the wreath we made a few years ago in the All-day workshop) and other choices you have of wreath shapes.

Click here for the my favorite Barry Christmas song. (Surely you're not still asking Barry who?) I once saw him perform this song live at  Foxwoods Casino, and tears were gushing down my face.  I guess that's why he sings "I write the songs that make the young girls cry." I wish I had a video of him performing it, but Camp Manilow doesn't like his videos on YouTube, and has most of them them taken down anytime someone puts one up.  Too bad.  I could be getting him lots of new fans...

Thurs. Dec. 3

 10am or 7 pm

Hollywood Squares

$29

This contemporary-style wreath has a base of fragrant balsam, but is embellished with shiny holly & boxwood greens and colorful red berries.

This picture does not do the class justice.  I will try to get a new sample made to include the decorations for this wreath.

Honest, I really am doing work when I find these links!  I am really getting old, because I remember watching this show all the time!  Click here to see how many of these "stars" you remember.

Sun. Dec. 6

 2 pm OR 4 pm

Partridge in a Pear Tree

$29

After 14 years of holding the Boxwood Tree class, we’ve come up with a new twist using faux pears, red ribbons, and a cute little birdie.  Of course, you can always choose from a wide variety of decorations instead, including glass balls, red berries, and dried flowers.

This makes a great gift for someone who no longer wants a big tree in their home, but still wants to have a Christmas tree.

If you have ignored all the music video links up to now, that's OK.  But if you only click one one, do this one.  It's irresistible!  It's a college men's group named Straight No Chaser, an extremely talented a capella choir (no musical instruments) and it's hysterical.  It has been making the rounds over the internet for years, and If you missed it, you missed something special.

Tues. Dec. 8

 10am or 7pm

My Favorite Things

$39

Fragrant balsam, shiny laurel, and wispy pine support orange slices, dried quince, lavender, faux apples, cinnamon sticks & wild rose hips.

This will be our fourth year with this popular class!  We have now added a morning session for our deluxe classes!

How could I put anything in but the original version by Julie Andrews?

Wed. Dec. 9

 10am or 7 pm

I Saw Mommy…

$29

…kissing Santa Claus underneath the Kissing Ball! Once a Victorian era parlor decoration, these now adorn porches across New England.  Can also hang indoors.  Made with fragrant balsam, a touch or laurel, glass balls, and colorful ribbons & bows.

This is another class celebrating its 14 year anniversary!

Surely you are in the Holiday Spirit by now, but if you still aren't, then enjoy Michael Jackson singing his version when he was a little boy.  What an amazing voice he had!

Thurs. Dec. 10

 10am or 7 pm

Owl City

$29

WHOOOO wants to make this?  You do! Combine two narrow wreaths of greens, cones and berries into a circular embrace, making a cozy home for a beautiful, white snow owl.

We offered this class 2 years ago, but the picture didn't give anyone an idea of how big it was, so we asked our staff member (and work-study intern) Amanda to pose with it (because I'd need an hour in make-up and wardrobe to look good enough for a picture!  Ah, to be 18 again...)

Everyone who comes to the nursery has been commenting on our cute, little white owls!

Alright, I couldn't find a holiday song about an owl, but I did find a group called Owl City, and their great video called "Fireflies"  It reminds me of the Island of Misfit Toys from Rudolf...

Let it Snow

OK, so you can’t actually use this ceramic shovel to dig your way out of a blizzard, but if you’re stuck at home, at least it will be lovely!

This isn't the song we all know, it's a different one by Boyz II Men, and the harmonies are amazing.

Wed. Dec. 16

Light Has Come

$29

Create this classy lantern centerpiece with fragrant evergreens so you can inhale the scents of the season indoors through the New Year.

We only have a limited number of these lanterns, so sign up early!

I have never heard this song before, and boy, was I missing out! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, whether or not you believe the message. Listen in.

Thurs. Dec. 17

 10am or 7 pm

Sound the Trumpet

$29

If you’re a musician, or just love good music, this arrangement of fresh greens and fresh cut flowers won’t leave you singing the blues.

Everyone who has come by in the last weeks has drooled over this arrangement, so please sign up early. I only bought 12 trumpets, because this really should be a deluxe class, but as a music lover myself, I had a soft heart, and kept it at $29.   sign up early, and I'll find out if I can get more.

For those of you who prefer their music on the formal side, here's a song for you.  I remember singing it in my own high school choir. I'm sending the link to my best friend in high school to see if she remembers it, too.  How fun is my job??? Lend an ear.

Sun. Dec. 20

2 pm OR  4 pm

I Have No Gift to Bring

$29

Not you, if you give make this poinsettia basket. Includes a gift certificate to refresh it for Easter with spring flowers at another workshop! Easy to do, so sign up to make several!  This is a great way to introduce your friends to the pleasure of a Bemis Farms Nursery workshop.  Give them the basket you made, and the gift certificate to return in April.

You know how I am always telling you to sign up for the last classes of a season?  This is it! I hate for anything to go to waste, since we won't be heating the greenhouse after Christmas. So you'll  get a poinsettia (size to be determined by whatever we have lots of) plus lots of greens, berries and cones.  We may even have other plants to choose from like cyclamen, Christmas cacti, or maybe even an orchid or two.  So be sure not to miss this class.

Let's finish off our video selection with one more video of 54,000 Christmas lights synchronized to Bob Seger's version of The Little Drummer Boy

Participants will leave with a completed project to enjoy as well as to show off to their friends, family and neighbors. Workshops are priced above. The price on the $29 workshops drops to $25 each if one person signs up for three or more total workshops and does so on or before November 16, 2009.

Please note the photos are similar to the final project. In order to have photos ready well in advance of class there may be some differences. In many cases photo is from a previous year and the exact container may no longer be available.

Many workshops fill up quickly, so be sure to reserve your space early. Pre-registration and prepayment are required. Refunds will be given up to 24 hours before workshop time, after that we will gladly save your materials for a week for you to come get.
